Beware of Allergic Reactions: Most Common Food Allergies for Dogs

Dogs have allergies just like we do, however it can be frustrating not knowing what is causing them to react. Even more so when it comes to food allergies, we want to be very careful about what we are feeding our dogs to avoid any type of allergic reaction.

What are the most common reactions to a food allergy?

The signs of food allergy are usually itchy skin or digestive disturbances such as vomiting or diarrhea. Other more subtle changes can also occur, including hyperactivity, weight loss, lack of energy and even aggression. If you are noticing these changes with your dog, see a veterinarian about your concerns.

What are the most common food allergies for dogs?

When having a puppy we have all heard the common, your dogs can’t eat chocolate, or onions. But did you know that the most common food allergens in dogs are proteins, especially those from dairy products, beef, lamb, chicken, chicken eggs, soy or gluten (from wheat). Each time a pet eats food containing these substances, the antibodies react with the antigens and symptoms occur.

Although this is the most common type of food allergy, dogs could be allergic really to any type of food.

How do I find out what my dog is allergic to?

The best and most accurate method of diagnosing food allergy is to feed a hypoallergenic diet for eight to twelve weeks as a food trial called an elimination trial.

This special diet must not contain any ingredients that the pet has eaten in the past. This also requires that no other foods, treats, or supplements be fed during the trial period, including flavored vitamins and heartworm preventives.

For more details about the elimination trial diet please consult with a veterinarian.

How do I deal with your dogs food allergy?

Once you are able to pinpoint what it is your dog is allergic to, avoid it. Make sure all the doggy treats, dry, and wet food are free of whatever your pet is allergic to.

Dogs that have developed an allergy to one particular food may develop other food-related allergies in the future. In addition, many dogs with food allergies have other allergies, such as flea allergy.

If any of these signs or symptoms look like it can be describing your pet, consult with a veterinarian to see how you can get your pet healthy and happy again.
